Safety tips for summer BBQ

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - As gatherings come back and the weather heats up, more people will be getting their grills out.

The first step with grilling safety is figuring out whether you have a charcoal grill or a propane grill.

According to the National Fire Protection Association both grills should only be used outside.

The grill should be placed away from your home, deck railing, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

Children and pets should stay at least three feet away from the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat build-up.

Lieutenant Shannon Ward with Wichita Fire said the most important part of grilling is paying attention.

“One of our number one fires is cooking fires, so whether you are inside cooking or outside cooking leaving what you are cooking can cause a fire, it can get out of hand fast,” Lt. Ward.

Another couple of things to keep in mind, if you have a gas grill make sure the lid is open before lighting it.

If you use charcoal and you plan to use starter fluid only use charcoal starter fluid.

Then make sure you let coals completely cool before disposing of them in a metal container.

When cooking cold items, make sure to put them directly on the grill, and don’t leave it out for longer than two hours. If it’s hotter than 90 degrees out, that time is cut in half to an hour.

For all food that needs to be cold; meat, pasta salad, salad, desserts, otherwise you can get a food born illness.

“The number one thing I would recommend is before you start cooking after you are done handling raw meat always wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water make sure you wash thoroughly,” Sara Sawer with the Sedgwick County Extension Office said. “That is the number one thing you can do to combat food-born illness.”

A meat thermometer should also be utilized.
