Summer heat builds in the week ahead
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A few high clouds across Kansas this morning, otherwise expect plenty of sunshine and temperatures warming into the upper 80s and low 90s through the afternoon.
Dry today, with a chance of showers and storms mainly after midnight across western Kansas tonight. There is a Slight Risk of severe storms mainly for Nebraska and far NW-Kansas. Dry weather is expected Monday.
The weather headlines this week will be “heat related” as temperatures climb to near 100, and the heat index will start pushing 100-105. A ridge of high pressure (aloft) over the Western U.S. (that’s been responsible for widespread heat and extensive drought) will spread eastward into the Plains by the middle of the week. Heat and humidity will slowly increase through Wednesday and should peak on Thursday. A cold front will knock temperatures back towards normal by the end of the week and next weekend. Normal highs for mid-June are in the upper 80s and low 90s across Kansas.
Between now and Friday the only heat relief will come in the form of scattered showers and storms (mainly overnight) and will only make it more humid throughout the day. There’s a lot of uncertainty in the extended forecast and the timing of the cold front Friday- how far south it moves through Kansas. This has a big impact on the temperature forecast as well as precipitation chances Friday into next weekend.
