WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - When it comes to cooling homes, many grapple with conserving energy without sacrificing comfort.

When it comes to saving costs, Evergy advises that your should keep your thermostat a little higher than you probably think it should be.

“So, 78 degrees is a common recommendation for an energy efficient temperature to set your air conditioning,” Every External Communications Manager Gina Penzig said. “It’s a good place to start. If you find that it’s working well for your family and you want to try a bit warmer, try that adjustment.”

But many who spoke with Eyewitness News Wednesday say 78 is too warm for a home when it’s approaching triple digits outside.

Evergy said it’s prepared for the summer months and the number of people who will be using more energy to keep cool. The company offers other tips to help them conserve energy.

“Closing your curtain and blinds to keep that sunshine out, the heat of the sun out. Also avoid the use of heat-producing appliances,” Penzig said.

Evergy also recommends making sure your air-conditioning unit is tuned up. That involves changing your filters and making sure your outside unit is cleared off.
